Former Caterpillar Inc. CFO David Burritt will succeed the retiring Gretchen Haggerty as CFO of United States Steel Corp. Burritt will assume the post on August 31. Burritt spent almost six years heading finance at Caterpillar after being promoted from corporate controller in December 2004. A longtime advocate of better-quality accounting and finance education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, told CFO in 2008 that if schools “would advocate appropriate curricula for preparers of financial statements and not just focus on inspectors of financial statements [i.e., auditors], we’d be better off.”
Urban League official Allie Braswell has dropped out of the race to become chief financial officer for the state of Florida. The move came after a weekend of news reports about his three personal bankruptcies. Braswell, a Democrat, was taking on incumbent Republican CFO Jeff Atwater.
United Stationers Inc. announced that Fareed Khan has decided to leave the $5 billion company to accept a position elsewhere. Todd Shelton, currently president of the United Stationers Supply division, will be promoted to CFO.
Angie’s List, which helps consumers select high-quality service professionals, has brought Thomas Fox on board to run its finance operation. He had been senior director of business planning and operations for mobile-technology firm Nokia.
Stephen Smith has quit his CFO job at beauty-products company Elizabeth Arden and will now run finance for Hain Celestial Group Inc. There, he will replace Ira Lamel, who announced last year that he would retire. Smith starts at Celestial on Sept. 3.
Ring Central Inc., a provider of cloud-based business communications solutions, has hired Clyde Hosein as executive vice president and CFO. He joins the company from semiconductor maker Marvell Technology Group, where he also ran finance. Hosein has held other CFO posts at Integrated Device Technologies, Advanced Interconnect Technologies and Candescent Technologies.
Steven Vattuone is the new finance chief at Electric Cloud, which offers solutions that automate and accelerate the software delivery process. He has previously been CFO at video broadcast company Grass Valley USA and data-virtualization provider Composite Software.
Nicole Carrillo, chief accounting officer at Opus Bank, has been promoted to CFO after the resignation of Thea Stuedii. She will take over the new position on August 30. Before joining the bank in 2011 Carrillo worked in the financial services practice at KPMG’s Los Angeles office. California-based Opus has $3.2 billion in assets.
Biopharmaceuticals director NeoStem Inc. has hired Robert Dickey IV as finance chief. He succeeds Larry May, who will take the newly created role of vice president, strategic initiatives. Dickey moved over from Hemispherx Biopharma Inc., where he was senior vice president of Inc.
Voltari Corp., a 10-year-old provider of data-driven marketing and advertising solutions, has selected John Breeman to be its CFO. He had been finance chief at Mojiva Inc., a mobile advertising solutions company.
