• Frederick G. Silny, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Guess Inc., will be leaving the apparel retailer May 9 to pursue other opportunities. Carlos Alberini will assume the top finance responsibilities until Guess finds a permanent CFO.
• SLM Corp., better known as Sallie Mae, named C.E. Andrews chief financial officer. Andrews, who joined the Reston, Virginia-based company in 2003 as executive vice president of accounting and risk management, has had interim responsibility for corporate finance since June 2005.
• John Poulin, chief financial officer of Reed Business Information, was named to the additional role of executive vice president. In this role, Poulin will lead the company’s IT and operations functions as well as corporate and operating finance. He’ll also direct the company’s customer relationship management and the divestiture of Rockaway, New Jersey-based Reed New Products. Poulin has been with RBI and its parent, Reed Elsevier, for 17 years.
• The Advisory Board Co. promoted David Felsenthal from chief financial officer to executive vice president, with significantly more responsibility overseeing strategy and operations. He is succeeded as CFO by senior director of finance Michael Kirshbaum, who joined the Washington, D.C.-based company in 1998. The Advisory Board also named controller Thomas Aprahamian to the additional roles of chief accounting officer, treasurer, and secretary. Aprahamian, who will report to Kirshbaum, joined the company in 2001.
• Port Washington, New York-based National Medical Health Card Systems Inc., a pharmacy benefits manager, tapped Stuart Diamond as chief financial officer. He succeeds Stuart F. Fleischer, whose employment with the company ended on January 20. Previously, Diamond served as CFO of Ogilvy Healthworld, a unit of WPP Group; Fenway Partners Inc., a private equity firm; Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp.; and Dunkin Donuts U.K. Ltd.
• Oscar Tengtio was named chief financial officer of Mercer Island, Washington-based Farmers New World Life Insurance Co. Most recently, Tengtio was CFO of Symetra Financial Corp. and its insurance subsidiaries; earlier, he held that position with various divisions of GE Financial Assurance.
• Talario LLC, a provider of digital writing technology, appointed Thor Iverson chief operating officer and chief financial officer. Iverson joined the Brookings, South Dakota-based company from Echelon Corp., a control networking infrastructure company, as vice president. Previously, he was president and chief executive officer of BeAtHome.com Inc.
• San Diego-based Genius Products Inc., a home entertainment distributor, hired John Mueller as chief financial officer. Mueller is stepping over from Jefferies & Co. Inc., where he served as senior vice president of media and entertainment investment banking in New York.
• Chairman Christopher Cox of the Securities and Exchange Commission announced that John W. White will join the SEC as its next director of the Division of Corporation Finance, effective March 20. He succeeds Alan Beller, who is returning to the private sector after more than four years at the post. White, currently a partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, became a member of the Standing Advisory Group of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board in January; he will resign that post but continue to work closely with the PCAOB.
