- Cow Spots: Gateway Inc., the San Diego-based computer manufacturer, replaced its CFO as part of a management shake-up in the midst of sluggish personal computer sales. Joe Burke was named senior VP and CFO, succeeding John Todd, who is leaving the company to pursue other interests. Burke, who joined Gateway in 1995 as VP of market development, most recently held the posts of SVP of global business development and SVP of the Latin American division. The move came the day after Gateway said its co-founder, Ted Waitt, would replace Jeff Weitzen, as Gateway’s CEO.
- The Top Banana: Chiquita Brands International Inc. appointed James B. Riley as SVP and CFO. Riley joins Chiquita from Elliott Co., where he was CFO. Riley replaces Warren Ligan, who left the banana producer last year. Riley was previously executive VP and CFO at Republic Engineered Steels Inc.
- Stretching the Rubbermaid: Freeport, Ill.- based household products maker Newell Rubbermaid Inc. named William Alldredge as CFO and president of corporate development. Alldredge succeeds Dale Matschullat, who was named the company’s general counsel. Alldredge joined Rubbermaid in 1983 as VP of finance after serving as president and chief executive of the Mirro Corp. Matschullat joined Rubbermaid in 1989 as VP and general counsel after holding a similar position at Allis- Chalmers Corp. In 1999, Alldredge earned $605,000 in salary and bonus, and took home another $179,000 in exercised options.
- Mapping the Bottom Line: Emap Plc, a British multimedia marketing and brand development company, named Keith Marriott as CFO of Emap USA. Marriott joined the company in 1988 as finance director of the Emap consumer magazine division in the U.K., and helped lead Emap’s International expansion. Marriott also has worked with the company in both France and Australia.
- Tsunami Tsui: Sigma Designs a Milipitas, Ca.-based maker of digital decoders for DVD players named chief accounting officer Kit Tsui as CFO. Tsui will assume the position immediately and will replace John Beck, who said he will leave the company to pursue another opportunity in Silicon Valley. Tsui has been with Sigma since its founding in 1982. She has served as director of finance, interim CFO, and most recently, chief accounting officer.
- E-learning Curve: Covington, Ky.- based A. F. Kelly & Associates, Inc. appointed Eric Weber as CFO of the high- tech consulting company that specializes in online learning, customer relationship management and E-business services. Weber, who is a CPA, was previously director of portfolio management at MarchFirst Inc., where he managed private equity in the company’s global investment operations. Prior to that he served as assurance manager at KPMG LLC, focusing on software and new economy clients in the Midwest.
- Total Access: MSU Corp., a developer and distributor of Web2U Internet appliance access devices, today announced that Stuart Bitting has been named the company’s new VP of finance and CFO. Prior to joining MSU, Bitting served as VP of finance and CFO of the LTC Group, a provider of digital services to advertising agencies. He was vice president operations finance of Centex Homes Corp. and held a similar position at Frito-Lay Inc.
- Bright Idea: San Diego-based Lightspan Inc. a provider of curriculum- based educational software and Internet products and services, announced that Michael A. Sicuro has joined the company as SVP and CFO. Sicuro replaces Carl Zeiger, who was acting CFO. Zeiger will continue as president and COO. Sicuro previously served as CFO of a digital rights management company and held financial positions at Blue Cross of California and U.S. Bancorp Mortgage.
