- Get To Work: Silicon Graphics Inc., a maker of computer servers and workstations, said it named CFO Hal Covert to the newly created position of president. Covert will also continue as CFO of the Mountain View, Calif.-based company, a gig he has held since July 2000. Before joining Silicon Graphics, Covert was CFO of Linux distributor Red Hat Inc. and VP and CFO of Adobe Systems Inc., the publishing software developer. Silicon Graphics also appointed Warren Pratt as COO. Pratt has served as VP of engineering and manufacturing since May 2000.
- David M. Johnson has gone straight to the heart of Hartford- based The Hartford Financial Services Group. He was named its EVP and CFO. Johnson succeeds David K. Zwiener, who was appointed president and COO of the insurance and financial services company’s property casualty operations last year. Johnson joins The Hartford from Cendant Corp., where he was senior EVP and CFO. In January 2000, CFO Magazine named Johnson one of the leading U.S. CFOs under age 40.
- Here’s a Story of a Man Named Brady: Time Domain Corp., a developer of wireless technology, appointed John Brady as CFO. Prior to joining Huntsville, Ala.-based Time Domain, Brady managed two of SBC/Ameritech‘s international investments. He also worked as CFO of Matav, a Hungarian telephone company, and as deputy CFO of Teledanmark, a Danish telephone company.
- Things are brightening up at Detroit-based utility holding company DTE Energy Co. The company promoted David Meador to the posts of SVP and CFO, effective with the close of the company’s merger with MCN Energy Group, owner of Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. Meador will succeed Larry Garberding, who will continue as EVP and a member of the DTE Energy board until his retirement at year-end. Garberding has served as EVP and CFO since 1990. Meador, who has served as both controller and treasurer since joining DTE Energy in 1997, will begin his new assignment when the merger with MCN Energy is completed, which is expected to be in June.
- Out With the Old: Old Republic International Corp. announced that SVP and CFO Paul D. Adams plans to retire at the end of the year. Adams indicated that he will most likely be selling some of his shares of Old Republic in the coming months, diversifying his assets in advance of retirement. In its latest proxy statement, the Chicago-based insurance holding company reported that Adams held directly and beneficially approximately 46,600 shares of common stock and options to purchase another 86,000 shares. As of March 31, 2001, the company had 118.5 million shares outstanding.
- I Can See Clearly Now: SkyCross Inc., a Melbourne, Fla.- based developer of wireless antenna products, named Kevin J. Bartczak as CFO. Before joining SkyCross, Bartczak served as CFO of Hi-Rise Recycling Systems Inc. Before that, he was VP, CFO, and treasurer of Paravant Inc., a manufacturer of electronic products designed for applications within aircraft support, fire control and signal intelligence.
- Strong Defense: Haifa, Israel-based defense contractor Elbit Systems Ltd. promoted Joseph Gaspar to CFO and corporate VP. Gaspar replaces Israel Farchi, who will become EVP of commercial affairs. The changes are to take effect July 1.
