The company behind TurboTax has hired the former CFO of Visa USA as its new finance chief.

R. Neil Williams will join Intuit, a software company, in January. He replaces Kiran Patel, who became general manager and senior vice president for the company’s consumer-tax business in June. Patel had been the CFO of Intuit for nearly two years.

The personnel announcement from Intuit, which also produces QuickBooks and Quicken, came just days after its major competitor, H&R Block, also revealed a major change in its financial executive ranks. Earlier this week, the tax preparer announced that CFO William Trubeck had stepped down after three years in the job. Treasurer Becky Shulman was named acting CFO in his place.

In August Visa announced it had restructured its board and hired former Gap CFO Byron Pollitt as CFO of Visa Inc. to see the credit-card company through its transition to becoming a public company. Since Williams had been finance chief of Visa USA, Pollitt did not, technically speaking, replace him when he left the company at the end of September.
