Chalk One Up for the Good Guys

–San Francisco-based Good Guys, Inc. promoted David Carter from director of financial planning and analysis to acting CFO, replacing Robert Stoffregen.

The change comes in the midst of a scaled-down closing move, as the electronic retailer reported it will close seven stores instead of the eight it originally intended. Stoffregen plans to stay with the company during lease renegotiations.

Management says that although Good Guys will take a significant non-cash charge for the closings, they will not affect cash flow for the current quarter. Instead, next year’s operating budget will take the hit.

Central Garden & Pet named Stuart Booth to fill the position of vice president of finance and CFO, succeeding Lee Hines, Jr., who has become vice president of Strategic Planning and remains a director.

Booth has worked as a senior executive in various fields. Before joining Lafayette, Calif.-based Central, he served as CFO of Respond TV, an interactive television infrastructure and services company. Before that, he was principal vice president and treasurer in charge of global bank relationships and financial operations for Bechtel Group. Booth began his career in the energy industry, working for Pacific Gas and Electric in various roles. Before joining Bechtel, he was senior vice president for Finance and Development for PG&E Enterprises, PG&E’s non-regulated business unit.

Central’s brands include Pennington Seed, AMDRO, Maxide, Strike, and Four Seasons garden products.

–Rod Heard has become vice president of corporate development and CFO of Calgary, Alberta-based zed.i solutions. Since July 2001, Heard had been a corporate strategy consultant to the provider of digital wireless flow meters for the natural gas industry.

Heard previously served as president and chief executive officer of Tractionworks, and since 1997 has been president of Heard Management Solutions. He holds a B.S. in Engineering from Queen’s University, and an M.B.A. from the University of Calgary.

–Mountain View, Calif.-based Marimba, Inc. appointed Mark Garrett vice president of finance and CFO. Garrett takes over for Ken Owyang, who will stay on during the transition.

Garrett, a twenty-year veteran of corporate finance, was most recently president and CFO of Homestead Technologies. Before that, Garrett served in finance positions at both Documentum, Inc., and Cadence Design Systems. He has a B.A. in Accounting and Marketing from Boston University and an M.B.A. in Organizational Behavior from Marist College.

He will report to Rich Wyckoff, CEO of the provider of systems management services for E-business.
