As one interviewee told us, accelerating the "speed of intelligence" is now the fundamental challenge for the finance function. Confronting a stubbornly volatile global economy, finance leaders at many major corporations have been driven to rethink their well-established processes for planning, budgeting, and forecasting. Their goal: to infuse those practices with increased flexibility, enabling the finance function to detect--and capture--marketplace realities that seemingly can change daily. To do so, they are involving operations in building forecasts from the ground up, abandoning static traditional budgeting processes in favor of dynamic rolling forecasts, and employing new developments in mobile technology to provide quicker and easier access to key performance indicators--"battleground KPIs," as another interviewee called them.
