- Abstract:
- How has volatility in the economy—and in particular, the stock markets—affected employers’ views of 401(k) plans? In our second research program in collaboration with Charles Schwab on 401(k) plans, we find that finance and human resources executives support making education and advice on 401(k)s, as well as broader financial advice, more readily available in response to employees’ concerns over shrinking retirement savings. Despite declining values in investment accounts, however, most respondents say the current 401(k) system works and needs only slight adjustments. In this report, we explore actions companies have been taking relating to their 401(k) plans since the downturn began, as well as their next steps for ensuring that their employees continue to plan and save for a fulfilling retirement.
