Abstract:
A small percentage of defined contribution (DC) plan participants abandoned equities in 2008, but they did so at a higher rate than in 2007. Automatically enrolled participants in target-date funds were the least likely to abandon equities, while those enrolling on their own and making their own portfolio decisions were the most likely to do so. The tendency to shift out of equities rose with age. Finally, most participants trading during 2008 did not exit the stock market, but made other portfolio decisions.
