The goalposts are shifting for financial reporting. Stakeholders are calling for slimmed down reports, with less data and more discussion about the future. They want to know the answers to a host of questions—why customer retention costs are skyrocketing, which products are most profitable, why the latest internet marketing campaign fell short of predicted returns, and how will all these issues and more impact future performance?
There are two main reasons why, increasingly, finance is being asked to answer questions that until recently were thought to be beyond its remit. First, technology advancements are bringing the same consolidating capabilities to nonfinancial data as they have to financial figures.
The second reason for the changing information demands on CFOs is that investors and regulators are increasingly embracing the idea of narrative reporting and more detailed future guidance.
