- Abstract:
- The first primaries of the 2008 presidential election are nearly upon us, and by all accounts the status of America’s health care system is a critical issue for the electorate—in some polls, second only to Iraq as a leading concern. What policy changes are the leading candidates for president espousing, and are clear trend lines developing between the views of the Republican candidates and those of the Democrats? Do the candidates address the rising costs of health care, or are they focused more exclusively on extending coverage to the uninsured? Finally, should employers that sponsor health plans expect drastically different treatment from a Republican president versus a Democrat? This article will explore these questions, setting the stage for a broader examination in the coming year of what health policy initiatives plan sponsors can reasonably anticipate from the new president chosen in 2008.
