- Abstract:
- The shareholder value movement has emerged since the early 1990s as a guiding principle not just for investors but also for management teams, as companies compete for capital to fund ambitious growth plans. When executing strategies toward the growth and sustained profitability that provide the return on capital investors demand, leading companies are adopting new discipline focused more on the investor mandate than on management and internal organisational priorities. Leading companies as well expect a different role from finance: proactive support in growth and performance management, starting in the boardroom and ending at the shop floor. This research programme among finance executives at leading European companies suggests that this change in role is less about the “ideal” finance function, and more about building the “right” finance function to fit the needs of a company and its management.
