Controllers who want to become CFOs need to put down their pencils and master soft skills.
Laura DeMars, CFO Magazine
June 1, 2007
The Controller position ostensibly is still key for internal promotion to the executive CFO position, according to pie chart. However, if you would like to enter into the CFO position outside of your organization, then the Controller experience is only acceptable if you enter an organization where you can create value at the CFO level. I believe a well-trained graduate, armed with the ability to display strong leadership characteristics, is best prepared for the CFO, but not the Controller position.
