Job Description
The key to appropriately managing a companys overall state and local tax cost is to align tax strategies with business initiatives and proceed with assisting the company with implementation. Ernst & Youngs State & Local Tax (SALT) practice provides the knowledge, experience, resources, and processes to bridge the gap between what is expected of a companys tax department and its current capacity. In addition to having depth of technical knowledge and experience, our professionals are knowledgeable about the business challenges companies are facing and how those challenges affect a companys state and local tax position. Our national network of practitioners focuses on both direct and indirect state and local taxes by offering a broad array of services. We are currently seeking a State & Local Tax Senior Manager candidate, specializing in State Income and/or Franchise tax, to manage multiple and challenging tax engagements and to contribute to the delivery of innovative tax planning ideas for our diverse clients. This includes in-depth knowledge in the following areas: multi-state income tax knowledge, including, but not limited to, unity, apportionment and state tax provisions. The following additional areas of knowledge are also desired: state tax audits and controversy, incentives and credits, and transactional taxes including, sales/use and property taxes. This position offers excellent opportunities for teaming, leadership, and career advancement to the right candidate. Responsibilities Demonstrate an understanding of complex tax concepts and effectively apply tax knowledge to client situations. Develop and deliver quality tax planning approaches with timely and responsive services and work products that meet and/or exceed client expectations. Identify and sell opportunities for tax planning and other special services. Manage small and large client service personnel/teams and lead marketing efforts in bringing thought leadership and service opportunities to our clients and the marketplace. Strong team player, with good leadership ability. One that works very well in a collaborative and teaming environment. In addition to core income and/or franchise tax opportunities, ability to identify other SALT services and involve the right subject matter specialists to ensure the highest quality service for our clients. To qualify, candidates must have:
- a bachelors degree, preferably with an emphasis in accounting, finance, or a related field (an advanced degree in tax or law is highly desirable)
- a minimum of 10-12 years of relevant tax consulting experience or equivalent experience in business or industry
- CPA certification, Member of the Bar, or foreign equivalent certification
- broad exposure to state and local taxation
- a very proactive client service and communication style
- broad exposure to financial statement tax provision, Subchapter C and tax compliance issues also preferred
- excellent managerial, organizational, leadership and verbal/written communication skills
