Freudian Slip-up?

Expeditors International, despite a name that alludes to quickness, cannot seem to get its paperwork in on time. Brushing off the maxim that late is better than never, the supply chain logistics firm even failed to deliver its 8-K last quarter.

Now, as Footnoted.org reports, Expeditors is turning to Freud to clear its conscience.

"You didn’t miss it; we didn’t publish it," the firm said in its latest 8-K filing, submitted earlier this week. "One should not read too much into the fact that we have not published an 8-K for a while. To paraphrase Freud, 'Sometimes a late 8-K is just a late 8-K.' "

Footnoted found that Expedited is no stranger to Freud, having mentioned the Austrian psychoanalyst five times in its filings since 2001 to explain various decisions.

Expeditors may be hoping to follow the enlightened path of several financial advisory firms that have brought psychologists on staff to help analysts and clients deal with making financial decisions and understanding what's behind those decisions. Investment News reported last month that within 10 years most financial-management firms will offer psychological services.

Still, anxious investors might be more satisfied if delinquent firms hire more staff to finish their filings in on time rather than invoking the "id" as an excuse.
