Thomas Moser, the German finance director of BMW's UK operations, is steeped in the tradition of high-performance automobiles and unrestricted motorways. However, Oxford's Eastern bypass is not the Autobahn and a Mini is not a McLaren.
Pushing his company's products to the limit, Moser was clocked by a speed camera doing 101mph in a 50mph zone. Already carrying several penalty points on his driving license, he knew he was in trouble. Despite the photographs, and after being given three chances to change his story, he insisted that it was his 19-year-old son Maximilian who was behind the wheel.
Moser recently received six-week jail sentence for perjury, a "sad, humbling and humiliating experience," according to his lawyer. His time away will force a crash course in succession planning for colleagues at BMW. Or, given the sudden, unexpected nature of his departure, perhaps "disaster recovery" is a better way to describe it.
