- Bankruptcy History
One important fact of history omitted about bankruptcy is that the earliest laws that protected debtor rights were among the Israelites around 1400-1200 BC. In the Torah, (Leviticus 25:10) it outlines the Jubilee year. Every 50th year, debts were canceled and slaves were freed. There were other laws in the Torah that protected the rights of debtors against exploitation. Biblical laws were way ahead of the rest of the world for many centuries in this and other areas.
