Esther Shein, CFO Magazine

I think Ms Shein's article is rightly concerned with setting out perimeters to prevent excessive use of the internet during working ours. The problems however have only been glossed over in the article and these are the easy accessibility of the net and its addictivenes which is insidious and can affect anyone who is normally careful over other things such as personal phone calls, excessive 'shmoozing', or even unauthorised absentiesm. I used to work for a company that provided very limited access and individuals needed authorisation from senior staff to log in, and we felt patronised as a result. I think in the long run a company needs to trust its staff not to be too abusive, ie logging into illegal sites and spending too much timne on personal use. The same applies for cigarette and coffee breaks, wandering around the office chatting to colleagues and phoning spouses every couple of hours etc.
