I have moved the HQ of two companies from CA to MA. While long-term cost savings could be (and was) cited in each instance, the primary motivator was to give major investors (even where one was a publicly traded company) the perception (and reality) that they were closer to HQ, a perception that they might have more control of the company than when HQ was over 2,000 miles away.
In the first instance, we moved HQ from Marin County to western MA in the same location as our 200,000 square foot manufacturing facility. In the latter publicly traded instance, it was a biotech company from La Jolla to the tech corridor around Boston.
