Bookkeeper, Embezzler, Felon

Linda Corra, for 12 years the bookkeeper of the Center for Hematology-Oncology in Boca Raton, Florida, has been sentenced to three years in prison for embezzling about $6 million.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Corra deposited checks drawn from the clinic's account into her personal accounts, beginning with a $72,556 check in June 2005. Her scheme was exposed after she quit her job and her successor audited the cancer clinic's books.

At the time of her arrest, Corra was charged with organized fraud, grand theft, money laundering, and forging checks, according to the Associated Press; she ultimately pleaded guilty to two counts of grand theft over $100,000.

According to the Associated Press, Corra used the money to buy a $1.5 million house, two Boynton Beach townhouses, and a 38-foot boat. As a result, she was able to pay back nearly $4.5 million; her plea agreement reportedly took that restitution into account. After serving her time in prison, she will have to make good on most of the balance, reported the AP.
