Qwest's One-Two Punch

Qwest calls on new and old CFO to help company traverse troubled waters. Also: Switchboard CFO heels it, DPM deriving expertise from new finance team, and Pacific Mercantile cashes in with banking veteran.

>>Qwest Communications CEO Richard Notebaert connects with Oren G. Shaffer, 59, to be new vice chairman and CFO of beleaguered telecommunications company... Before hooking up with Qwest, Shaffer was president and COO of Sorrento Networks and CFO of Ameritech and Goodyear... Replaces Robin R. Szeliga, who hangs on to EVP title, but must now focus efforts on whittling down Qwest's big pile of debt...

Notebaert recruits three and reshuffles other management-team executives to refocus battered company... Meanwhile, corporate counsel Blake Tempest denies Wall Street Journal report that company under Department of Justice investigation... Could be tough road ahead for Shaffer...
